Today is International Reggae Day, and to help you along with your celebrations, we’d like to offer up one of the greatest soundtracks ever put to film. Rockers the 1978 film directed by Theodoros Bafaloukos is a Robin Hood-esque story centred around Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace a drummer struggling to make ends meet in the ghettos of Kingston, who looks to make some extra money by distributing records to the Island’s many sound systems – much to the dismay of the local mob, who set about putting a stop to his new business venture.
The sheer vibrancy of the imagery the colours that permeate through the screen, through the effortless style of the lead characters in their Adidas tracksuits, high waisted trousers and brightly coloured bowler hats are timeless fashion statements, but it’s the soundtrack that brings the story to life. The film features a number of celebrated reggae musicians in the form of Leroy Wallace, Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs and Jacob Miller so it’s not such a surprise of the quality of music here. So sit back, relax and let the wonderful compilation below liven up your Reggae Day.
