We at The MALESTROM were very fortunate to speak to a wide range of inspirational and quite remarkable people this year. With 2018 soon to be rung in, heralding the promise of a better twelve months for all of us, we’ve collated the very best words of wisdom from our amazing interviewees to ease you gently into the New Year with a touch of enlightenment. Words to take with you and hopefully help you smash those resolutions you made that seemed so manageable at the time, but are starting to look like mountains.

“I think if you’re a young person starting out you need to gather the experience you need, and if you have any big ambitions make sure you’re prepared for them and do it slowly and do it the way that you get satisfaction from it. Also, perseverance will get you further than anything else.”

“On anyone’s journey through life, you are going to fail and that’s okay, it’s what you do after that. As I’ve got older I don’t take the ‘L’s’ as a loss, I take them as a lesson. I don’t do things to prove people wrong, but to prove myself right. So don’t focus on negative things people are trying to say, focus on what you want to try and achieve.”

“You see, when you open your eyes to the way the world works, or what you want, or the human condition – life gets much more exciting. It’s all about your personal perspective, it’s not about what you’ve been given, or luck, it’s about the appreciation you have for life. If someone’s unhappy, change your situation or change the way you look at it. It’s all about the way we look at the world, the people I know that are the happiest tend to have a more positive outlook, perspective if you like. Keep your eyes open and enjoy the adventure.”

“Find your inner passion, what makes you happy, do that for yourself because if you’re happy you can be a better friend, a better husband, a better Dad or whatever you want to be, but it all starts from you. Everybody’s gonna hit a bump in the road, but have no regrets and learn from mistakes and keep on going forward because you can’t change the past but you can really affect the future. Live in the now and keep pushing your limits.”

“Actions speak louder than words, so don’t just talk about it, do it! Always follow your heart, it’ll never lead you astray and keep you on your destined path. Trust in your intuition and believe in yourself. The pain of discipline versus the pain of regret.”

“Embrace patience, because so many people are in a rush to get to where they want to go, and also be careful about what you wish for! But embracing patience is the best piece of advice I can give.”

Wilderness expert Daniel Hume

“There’s a great quote by a Native American from the 1800’s called Standing Bear,

“The old Lakota was wise. He knew that a man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans too. So he kept his children close to nature’s softening influence.”

No matter who you are, even in the west and in the modern age, we still need to be connected to the natural world and that quote has always stuck with me.”

Former heavyweight boxing champion of the world Frank Bruno, MBE

“Remember, talk is cheap, actions take time and effort. Do not trust everyone who says the right things, they maybe a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Remember every day to be nice to people, there is too much aggression in this world and that comes from a former boxer!”

“We all deserve to find our passions, have the courage to live them, and to try and lighten up. Life doesn’t have to be taken so seriously. When life flashes before your eyes, make sure you have plenty to see.”
