UK Camping and Glamping Spots

Oh the great outdoors! Whether you’ve got a restless family of five or you just fancy a weekend away with your partner, The MALESTROM suggests a staycation in Britain is the solution to all of your summer holiday needs. The falling price of the pound in Europe post Brexit offers up an opportunity to the resilient British tourist industry and with the nation needing to stand up and stand together it’s the perfect opportunity to explore Britain’s stunning countryside and dig out the family tent for a spot of camping. Not sure where to look? Fear not we have you covered, with a little help from GO Outdoors’ Ian Mackintosh, we’ve selected seven sumptuous sites for the perfect place to pitch up right in the heart of nature.

Treloen Campsite (Cornwall)

The Honeycomb snug

Treloen campsite, right down there at the bottom of the Isles in the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, is we can confirm a beautiful part of the world. It’s serene and earthy, and at times it feels almost untouched.  It’s not often you get a sea view from your tent but many of the very generous pitches here boast just that, given that you’ll be hammering in your pegs on a cliff top. For those wanting a bit more in the way of home comforts you can book a Yurt or “honeycomb snug” which have wood burners to keep you toasty on those predictably cool summer evenings.

Sunnyfield (Kent)

Situated in the Kent downs this lovely secluded spot has a bit of something for everyone. You can do camping old school or add a bit of luxury to your stay, in a spacious bell tent, and for the even more salubrious hire a campervan. You get your own fire pit, which of course signals BBQ time and for all you cleanly campers go ahead and take a shower in their unique horse box. As a cherry on top if you hit the local farmers market and grab some ingredients, they’ll make you a wood fired pizza, what lovely people!

Housedean (Brighton & Hove)

Right between the historic town of Lewes and the hedonistic haven of Brighton this great little site on a working farm overlooks the stunning South Downs. A little walk takes you to views of the National Park’s Seven Sisters chalk cliff and the promise of the coastline make it a joy to wake up in the morning. There’s additional touches like open air hot showers, so you can appreciate nature while you wash, this one is a winner in the camping stakes.

Fordhall Farm (Shropshire)

England’s first community owned farm offers up a picturesque, rural camping site. If you’ve got family in tow there’s plenty going on as regular events and activities ranging from wild foraging to fire starting lessons, keep everyone occupied. There’s also an award winning restaurant, so there’s certainly going to be a few less nights cooking bangers round the fire. At Fordhall Farm, accommodation is all about yurts – volunteer built, giving you that extra special community feel when you lay your head to rest. Situated in the idyllic Tern Valley you’ll feel very much like you’re living the simple life, while you sip a cold beer from their solar powered ice boxes. Oh the irony!

Great Langdale Campsite (Lake District)

Ok we’re not going to lie, one of Britain’s greatest camping spots and previously best kept secrets has become the must see part of the Lake District, the number of people coasting around in their 4×4’s dwarfs that of year’s gone by. However it remains one of the most astounding locations to holiday in the UK. As far as stunning natural beauty goes the Lake District pretty much corners the market, and Langdale with it’s dry stone walls and epic mountain range makes you wonder if Peter Jackson missed a trick with his Lord of the Rings trilogy! This site in Langdale offers up breathtaking views as well as some of the best trails and hikes in Britain. Trust us – very little beats a pint in the Old Dungeon Gyll after a trek up one of the towering pikes.

Trill farm (Devon)

The rolling hills of East Devon is the setting for this organic farm campsite. It’s unique selling point is that it’s exclusively set up for larger groups of ten to fifty so perfect for family get togethers or celebrations. There are open-sided barns to eat the organic food you buy from the farm shop and solar powered showers to get you clean. With the emphasis on eco there are even composting toilets to keep Mother nature happy. You can even pre-order a sourdough loaf to be baked fresh for you in the morning, it’s essentially a countryside version of living in East Dulwich. If you’re looking for secluded and off the beaten this one’s for you.

Petruth Paddocks (Somerset)

A Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, ok sounds good, and something The MALESTROM might need, after a visit to Petruth Paddocks near Cheddar Gorge you’ll realise why they got the award. Here in the heart of Somerset you’ll find a wholesome anything goes attitude perfect for those post-Glastonbury blues. There’s young and old and a very relaxed vibe, which is probably due to having their own chill out field and a laissez-faire abandon. Bring your own tent or stay in one of their stylish Shepherds huts (accommodates eight). You can even bring your pooch as Petruth Paddocks is canine friendly, just watch out for the doggy doo on those stumbling, drunken, late-night toilet trails.
