Tons to see, hear and do over the next seven days. There’s an event that promises to help you live a better life. Some exhibitions and theatre to cleanse the soul, inspiring talks with knowledgeable folk.

However, the cultural event that’s got us really excited is the return to our screens of the one and only Alan Partridge this Monday. Now that’s something to celebrate. Here’s The Weekly EDIT.

Live Well London (March 1st -3rd)

With Spring being the season for renewal and rejuvenation, those looking to make some life changes this 2019 might want to think about heading to London’s newest wellbeing event, Live Well London.

Get inspired, shop your favourite brands and be put through your paces all under one roof.

Over 70 trusted experts including Liz Earle MBE, fitness pro Matt Roberts and Anxiety Solution author Chloe Brotheridge will be on hand to help and there will be free walk-in sessions and workshops on everything from how to cook healthy dishes, to improving body confidence.

Fernand Léger: New Times, New Pleasures (till March 17th)

It’s the last chance to see the first major UK exhibition dedicated to the renowned painter, sculptor and filmmaker Fernand Léger’s (1881-1955) work in thirty years.

The exhibition at Tate Liverpool brings together more than 50 of his works in film, graphic design and textiles all of which draw attention to Léger‘s interest in his time lived within the ‘mechanical age’, and the rich experiences he had during it.

Hendrix Talks (various)

Jimi Hendrix performs onstage

At Handel & Hendrix in London, there’s a series of talks focusing on how the icon Jimi Hendrix used the guitar in groundbreaking ways and went on to change the way we think about music.

Guitarist, and expert of Jimi Hendrix’s sound, Nigel Jones, will present the interactive talks each focusing on a different theme related to an event in Hendrix’s life.

London Film and Comic Con Spring (March 2nd – 3rd)

This bite-sized Spring edition of the London Film & Comic Con lands at Olympia London this week.

It might be smaller than the big daddy event later in the year, but it’s perfectly formed and there’s still plenty of reasons to attend, not least the chance to meet the like of Freddie Kruger himself Robert Englund and one time Bond George Lazenby.

There will also be plenty of panel discussions, merchandise and a large helping of cosplay.

Glory at The Dukes (till March 2nd)

Two men wrestling

Grappling and theatre have come together in perfect harmony for this new play at The Dukes Theatre in Lancaster.

‘Glory’ sees faded wrestling star Jim ‘Glorious’ Glory and three other amateurs in the sport put all their various issues in a headlock as they confront subjects such as race and identity inside the squared circle.

With British wrestling seeing a huge resurgence at present there’s no better time for a unique stage show like this.

Gigs

Radio 3’s experimental music programme Late Junction gets its very own mini-festival at EartH in Hackney this weekend.

The festival, programmed by the Barbican, will feature music from brilliant acts such as Hen Ogledd, sci-fi electronica from Gazelle Twin along with live versions of the programme’s Collaboration Session.

Plus there’s a live Late Junction Mixtape for the gathered audience. It promises to be a sonic blast.

Wee Dub Festival (Edinburgh, March 1st – 3rd)

Wee Dub Festival returns to the Scottish capital for a celebration of all things reggae, dub and sound system culture.

This year the festival will once again host a series of sessions across various underground venues in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Aside from the various gigs, there will also be a Sunday Social, featuring kids activities and speciality Jamaican food.

There will also be a dub clinic and film screenings.

Eats & Drinks

World Pasty Championships (Eden Project, March 2nd)

Some serious world-class crimping will be going on as amateur and professional bakers battle it out to produce the best baked West Country delicacy that is the pasty, fittingly at the Eden Project in Cornwall or Kernow to the locals.

Along with all the filled pastry knocking about there’s also plenty of entertainment on hand from comedians and local bands, most notably the Fisherman’s Friends who’ll be bringing sea shanties aplenty ahead of their upcoming movie version of their lives.

Garage Brunch (March 2nd)

Arriving at a secret location on Saturday is the Garage Brunch where for a long afternoon you can get down to the sounds of DJ Policy and the biggest garage pioneers and DJs – DJ Swiss (So Solid Crew), and Lonyo (Summer of Love).

Along with the tunes you get a bottomless hour of their signature cocktail and a2-course meal – of Garage Fried Chicken Buckets (and Garage Fried Quorn), followed by Bo Selecta Apple Tart and Ice Cream. Which might be so good you want a rewind.

New Podcast

She Kills (Shudder, March 1st)

She has one of the best voices in horror history, so Adrienne Barbeau is a natural fit for this new podcast that looks at women who worked in front and behind the camera in the genre.

Barbeau, perhaps best known as the radio host with the silky tones in John Carpenter’s The Fog, here chats with names such as Dee Wallace and Jennifer Tilly on titillating topics like Sex by Death, Final Girls, and I think we can all agree, the one we’re really waiting for Nunspoloitation.

New Music

Weezer (The Black Album)

Ever since 1994’s The Blue Album, Weezer have been putting out self-titled, colour-coded albums. This latest incarnation – Weezer The Black Album – marks their fifth in that style and thirteenth in total.

Their last record wasn’t received favourably across the board but the band have been back on form as of late as displayed in their recent covers LP where they breezed through the likes of Africa by Toto and A-ha’s Take on Me.

Weezer fans won’t be disappointed with this effort. Check out the brilliant video for single High as a Kite here.

Hozier – Wasteland, Baby!

Hozier’s long-awaited sophomore album Wasteland, Baby! lands on Friday and fans of the Take me to Church musician will be glad to know that it’s a return that’s been worth the long wait.

This new record from the Irish star shows touches of light and shade and shows that being out of the public gaze for a while hasn’t hampered his talent for penning a good tune, such as catchy single Almost (Sweet Music).

New TV

This Time With Alan Partridge (BBC1, Monday)

It’s been 25 long years since Steve Coogan’s greatest comedy creation Alan Partridge hosted a telly show on the BBC.

But Lazarus like he’s risen from his daytime slot on North Norfolk digital radio, and in this new 6 part series is getting the chance to co-host on primetime popular magazine show This Time, filling in for regular presenter John Baskell.

But how will cope on the sofa with the show’s other presenter Jennie Gresham (Susannah Fielding)? Exactly how you’d expect Alan to behave. Thankfully. With other faces from Partridge past popping up like his long-serving PA Lynn (Felicity Montague), we’re in for a genuine treat here.

Cricket Fever – Mumbai Indians (Netflix, March 1st)

This eight-part Netflix documentary-series, follows the Mumbai Indians cricket team in the Indian Premier League, as they try and defend the title they won in 2017.

From the trailer we know we’ll be getting some high octane cricketing action, passionate fans, moments from the Mumbai Indians dressing room and pep talks from the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Sign us up.

New Movies

Fighting with my Family

Fans of the entertaining world of wrestling will be familiar with English WWE superstar Paige.

This fun comedy tells the story of her journey from humble beginnings in a wrestler filled family to her tryout for the company and subsequent rise to worldwide fame.

Funnyman Steven Merchant steps behind the camera to direct with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson on producing duties and also popping up in key scenes to add some star power.

The Hole in the Ground

If you thought the only scary thing to come out of Ireland as of late was Brexit backstop negotiations then get prepared for something equally as terrifying from this atmospheric chiller set in the Emerald Isle.

It follows single mother Sarah (a brilliant Seána Kerslake) and her young son Chris as they move to a creaky home in the remote Irish countryside.

One evening her son disappears into the nearby forest which hides a huge mysterious sinkhole. When Chris reappears all seems normal for a little while, until he starts behaving very strangely.

There’s nothing groundbreaking here, but it features enough scares throughout to keep horror fans happy.
