Anyone who’s got their fingers vaguely on the pulse of surf culture will likely be aware of the legendary crew that became known as the Momentum Generation. This band of surfers that included legends of the sport such as Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Shane Dorian & Taylor Knox changed the face of surfing in the 90s beyond recognition and brought it slap bang into the mainstream.
Award-winning filmmakers Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, the team behind the brilliant The Two Escobars and Favela Rising have taken these innovators as their most recent subject matter to create, what on the surface, looks like another spectacular documentary, gaining access to all of the main players in the crew and getting them to tell their stories through their own voices.
Momentum Generation, which boasts recently retired Hollywood actor Robert Redford as executive producer, was captured over the course of multiple years of production, utilising the crew’s immense private video archive.
It examines the deep friendships that were formed between them as well as how they were seriously put to the test throughout their careers as top athletes and cultural icons, competing at the very highest level in tournaments and constantly pushing each other’s boundaries. It definitely wasn’t always plain sailing, with brotherhood bonds often being broken with fierce rivalries developing between these elite, poster boys of surf.
The wave rippers involved in the doc went on to win multiple world titles, break records, and redefine the world’s perception of the surfer, youth culture, and what it really means to live the dream. Momentum Generation looks like it will give a fascinating window into the world of what it was like to be right there at the very forefront of an era-defining movement.
Momentum Generation will be available to download digitally from 5th November 2018.
