Movie Madness – Films to Look Forward to in 2018

When we think New Year, we think new movies and at first glance it looks like 2018 is going to be big at the box office. We’ve done our research to bring you a taster of some of the mouthwatering movies on the horizon, get excited.

The Meg

A film about the prehistoric gigantic megladon has long been mooted and YouTube is awash with fake trailers combining clips from previous shark movies teasing the prospect of a showstopping sea monster. Well it appears our wishes have come to pass, and Jason Stathom has confirmed as much, stating recently,

“I just did a shark movie. It’s a cross between, I’d say, Jaws and Jurassic Park.”

Also starring Ruby Rose and directed by Jon Turletaub, The Meg is centred around a deep sea submersible manned by Chinese scientists who’s vessel has been attacked by – wait for it – a 70 foot megladon, that has survived unbeknownst to the world in the Mariana Trench, a vast expanse in the Pacific Ocean, considered the deepest area of water on the planet.

There’s been some half decent attempts at shark movies in recent times with most notably The Shallows and 47 Metres Down being lots of fun, in what’s always been seen as a no go zone in movie land thanks to Spielberg’s still untouchable classic Jaws. Being currently certified as PG 13 is a slight concern however, either way we’ll be able to see what all the fuss is about on August 10th next year.

A Quiet Place

This one looks very interesting and has big potential to be one of the sleeper star scares of 2018. Featuring husband and wife combo Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, who’s also on directorial duties, this mysterious supernatural fright fest carries the tagline,

“Listen closely, move carefully, and never make a sound. If they can’t hear you, they can’t hunt you.”

In the back of beyond at an isolated farmhouse a family must negotiate their daily chores in the strictest of silence or face the very frightening prospect of being hunted down and killed. Quite what it is exactly that is lurking in the who knows where is anybody’s guess, but the trailer has certainly whet the appetite for what looks like a unique, edge of your seat thrill ride. It’s official release date is April 6th, 2018.

Halloween

Despite the many incarnations of the life and times of nutter with a knife Michael Myers, it’s hard (for us at least) not to get excited when a new Halloween release is announced. The Bogeyman is set to be back on the silver screen next October, which makes sense, but what can we expect from this latest attempt?

Well the good news is John Carpenter is well and truly on-board, penning the script, and Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode the ultimate ‘final girl,’ in what’s being described as a direct sequel to the original film. So in other words they’re completely ignoring the rest of the franchise, which may not be the worst idea given how convoluted the storylines and sequence of events have become. John Carpenter had this to say in a recent interview with Stereogum,

“Her part was written into the script and they had this idea — it’s kind of a… I don’t know how to describe it. It’s almost an alternative reality. It picks up after the first one and it pretends that none of the other [sequels] were made. It’s gonna be fun. There’s a really talented director and it was well-written. I’m impressed.”

That director is David Gordon Green who will oversee Laurie Strode’s final confrontation with the masked maniac who has haunted her dreams since that fateful night four decades ago.

Rampage

Based on the classic 80s computer game and featuring everyone’s favourite rock, Dwayne Johnson and the wonderful Naomie Harris, this looks like being an all-out action entertainment extravaganza. When we say based on the original game, it seems safe to say in the loosest sense given we’re presumably rooting for Johnson & Harris here.

Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson) who has been caring for a gorilla named George since his birth, sees his long term friend mutate into an enormous rage filled ape, due to some sort of genetic radioactive experiment gone horribly wrong. He then sets about destroying everything in its path.

If losing your best friend in such a disturbing fashion wasn’t bad enough, our musclebound tough guy with a penchant for primates soon learns there’s a giant wolf and an oversized alligator causing trouble as well. Time is of the essence as Davis Okoye sets about saving firstly Chicago and then the world! In cinemas from April 20th next year.

The Irishman

Currently in production excitement levels are pretty much off the scale for this mobtastic movie. Earlier in the year we reported the exciting news that Joe Pesci was joining the cast of this hotly anticipated Netflix crime drama movie directed by gangster movie godfather Martin Scorsese. In what’s turned into a mini Goodfellas reunion the film sees Bob De Niro take on the title role of mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, who claimed on his deathbed to have been responsible for the murder of Jimmy Hoffa, the American labor union leader.

Al Pacino co-stars as Hoffa, with Pesci playing Russell Bufalino a mob boss from Pennsylvania. The cast is padded out handsomely with Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano and Bobby Cannavale. The Irishman looks set to get at least a two week theatrical release making it eligible for the Oscars. So there might be some gold statues coming the casts way when red carpet time comes rolling round.

Deadpool 2

After the huge success and critical acclaim that accompanied Deadpool this eagerly anticipated follow up will likely see our man up to his usual antics, expect action and comedy in equal measure, with lots of guns, explosions and pop culture references in abundance. The recently dropped teaser trailer sees Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) spoofing Bob Ross’ The Joy of Painting, it’s very funny but offers little in the way of what to expect from this sequel.

The confirmed news of course is that Josh Brolin will fill the role of Cable, the hardened futuristic soldier, and looks to have got himself well and truly ripped for the role, if social media is anything to go by that is.

It appears the story will largely focus on introducing the X-Force team, which will no doubt spawn a raft of follow ups, but for now here’s hoping Deadpool 2 delivers on the laughs that made the first feature such a success. In cinemas June 1st, 2018.

And finally one that’s certainly left us scratching our heads here at The MALESTROM HQ.

Scarface

There’s not much to say here other than why? If ever there was an untouchable classic it’s Brian De Palma’s Scarface, yes we know it’s a re-make itself, of the 1932 film, but they left it a good fifty years and times were a bit different. Good luck to Diego Luna as Tony all the same, some big Pacino shaped shoes to fill. Apparently it’ll be hitting cinemas in the summer of 2018.
