The MALESTROM Weekend EDIT

The sun is finally threatening to grace us with it’s much needed presence and with it the nation starts to become upwardly mobile, searching out ways to fill the weekend as we look forward to the summer months. It’s also that time of the year when festivals, exhibitions and big screens start popping up on every street corner the length and breadth of the country and with that in mind we’ve brought you some of the highlights on offer over the next few days in The MALESTROM Weekend Edit.

What To Do

Grand National at The Merchant

It’s Grand National weekend and that means fair-weather gamblers the nation over ring the one person they know to find out how to fill out a betting slip, before putting a quid each way on fourteen different horses, celebrating a fourth place finish at a quarter of the odds and collecting £7.80 from the bookies before getting outrageously drunk! Jokes aside if you fancy a flutter and fancy enjoying the days festivities without actually getting a ticket to the big event, then Liverpool, rather than Aintree is the place to be. Make the most of the many big screen offerings like the one at The Merchant where free entry to the garden is accompanied by a range of Gins and Pimms followed by their Nightcrawler Pizza, perfect for lining that empty stomach to go along with your now empty wallet.

Flatpack Film Festival Birmingham

Today signals the start of a serious treat for movie buffs in Birmingham with the opening of the Flatpack Film Festival. Running up untill the 22nd the fest showcases a carefully curated programme of great movie screenings, events, instillations and even parties. Highlights include a showing of Jane Fonda’s sci-fi classic Barbarella tomorrow night and performances of Macbeth, created by The Paper Cinema, that promises to immersive the audience into their unique 2D world.

Power Up at the Science Museum

There’s still time to get down to the Science Museum as the returning and popular Power Up exhibition enters it’s final weekend. Perfect for Dad’s and their lad’s or alternatively a nostalgia inducing day of fun for all you old school gamers. There’s over 180 consoles from the last 40 years and all the best games will be on offer, from Mario Kart to Sonic, Streetfighter to Tekken, this is an event not to be missed, there’s even a BBC Micro to really show your age as you stroll down memory lane.

Edinburgh Comic Con

Comic book fans North of the border will be descending on Edinburgh International Conference Centre in their droves this weekend for the fifth year of Edinburgh’s comic convention. They’ll be plenty to make the geekiest of hearts race in this celebration of all things from the wide world of comic books and science fiction, not least the appearance of the co-creator of Marvel’s Deadpool, Fabian Nicieza ,and Stefan Kapicic who played the role of Colossus in the first film and in the anticipated sequel Deadpool 2. With free to play arcade machines, wrestling matches and a Cosplay championship it’s set to be two days of rather delightful madness.

Where to Eat & Drink

London Coffee Festival at Old Truman Brewery

London has become the coffee connoisseurs capital of the world, and this weekend to underline that fact The Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane will host the annual London Coffee Festival. What can you expect from this four day extravaganza? Patty & Bun, Brighton

If you happen to be sauntering by the seaside this weekend, then London’s number one burger joint Patty & Bun have recently opened their first venture outside the capital nestled in Brighton’s South Lanes. The menu includes such culinary delights as the ‘Smokey Robinson’, the ‘Lambshank Redemption’ and not forgetting the ‘Whoopi Goldburger’ amongst a host of other offerings. There’s plenty of Veggie options and gluten free buns on offer, for those looking at ways to combat that unsightly new rash! Burgers don’t get much better, check out the full menu HERE

Why shop when you can swap? If you’re interested in living a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle then why not start at the SwapAholics Spring Clothing Swap in Shoreditch. It’s not so much as a Spring Clean as a Spring recycle as you’ll be traipsing home with whole new wardrobe, as every item you donate can be exchanged with another eager swapper. What To Watch

Rampage hits cinema screens this weekend as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson does what he does best. This monstrous creature feature based on the classic 80s computer game, sees primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson) set about saving Chicago from a gorilla named George who’s mutated into an enormous rage filled ape, a giant wolf and an oversized alligator. Sure to be a box office smash and a great dose of weekend action entertainment.

Pick of the Week

Vans x A Tribe Called Quest

Now this is a collaboration to get excited about, two legendary worlds collide as Vans pay homage to Hip-Hop heavyweights A Tribe Called Quest for a monster range. There’s five classics to choose from in the form of the Slip-On, Old Skool, Authentic, Sk8-Hi, and Era, and a brand new UltraRange all paying tribute to the groups iconic album artwork, and mesmerising lyrics spanning 1990-2016. The Sk8-Hi (see below) are standout but there’s something for Vans lovers of all ages in what’s set to be a successful meeting of minds. Shop the full range HERE

Staying In

For the single man this weekend’s sporting exploits should have you well and truly covered, there’s Premier League football aplenty as the fight for the top four continues on BT and Sky, with the Spurs/Man City game at Wembley kicking off at the unusual time of 7:45 pm this Saturday evening. The Commonwealth Games wraps up this weekend and there’ll be plenty of medals still on offer with the traditional sprint relays always worth a watch.

If it’s a weekend at home with the other half then Netflix has you covered with a whole host of binge worthy box-sets, we recommend under the radar docuseries Flint Town about an understaffed police force trying to maintain order in the crime riddled city in Michigan. Unflinching and emotive it’s a perfectly constructed documentary. Otherwise, if you can access it, HBO’s documentary about the life of wrestling superstar Andre the Giant received an overwhelming thumbs up from critics and viewers alike when it aired on Thursday.
