Films fans far and wide recognise that visionary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick was one of the greatest auteurs in the history of motion pictures. With revered classics like The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey among the highlights of an incredible career, he defined genres and immersed us into worlds of the like never seen before in film.
This week The Design Museum in London throws open its doors for Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition, a retrospective on the American director, screenwriter and producer that will give an exclusive insight into Kubrick’s mind through rare objects, projections and interviews exploring his special relationship with England and particularly London, as his primary film location and source of inspiration.
The show charts Kubrick’s journey in cinema with themed rooms, each based around different films. Visitors will be able to relive iconic scenes from many of his movies such as Eyes Wide Shut, A Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon with around 700 objects, films and interviews on display.

Expect to see a detailed model of the Centrifuge-set that Kubrick had developed for 2001: A Space Odyssey, along with film props such as the infamous Born-to-Kill helmet worn by Private Joker in Full Metal Jacket, and many costumes designed for Kubrick’s movies.
Along with the pre and post production material such as storyboards, set designs, props and production documents, there are immersive aspects of the exhibition. These include a replica carpet from his 1980 film The Shining to walk on, if you dare, and a “one-point-perspective” corridor, paying homage to Kubrick’s signature filming technique.
The exhibition includes important works by designers Hardy Amies, Saul Bass, Milena Canoneroand Ken Adam, art and photography from Diane Arbus, Allen Jones and Don McCullin, designs from Saul Bass, Elliot Noyes and Pascall Morgue alongside contributions from renowned directors.
Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition opens at The Design Museum on the 26th April, running until September 15th 2019.
