During these strange, challenging times we’re currently living through, general feelings that we’re unwell and collective levels of anxiety can scarcely have been higher. While there’s no cure all for the dis-ease many of us are suffering, there’s one substance that might just give us a helping hand in a number of departments.
We’ve championed the healing properties of CBD here at The MALESTROM previously. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive chemical found in marijuana plants, which doesn’t contain the active THC that gets you high. Extensive studies have found it to have serious benefits when it comes to sleeping, anxiety and for pain relief. Before starting it’s useful to understand the differences between a Cannabidiol and Terpenes as they vary in their effects.
Anti-anxiety prescriptions in the United States were up by 34.1% over the month of March, but on this side of the pond us Brits seem to be favouring a more natural approach. Research by Eos Scientific found that a quarter of Brits would rather use holistic remedies than medical prescriptions to treat their mental health.
CBD has also been proven to help with other conditions. The Harvard Medical reported scientific evidence showing CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases stop them all together, in those suffering from childhood epilepsy syndromes. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD. Harvard also showed positive results in sufferers of insomnia and chronic pain.
A study from the European Journal of Pain showed CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis. Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. American body the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) looked at its effects on generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and said that CBD was shown to reduce stress in animals. Subjects in the study were observed as having lower behavioural signs of anxiety.
Another report from the World Health Organisation said CBD had “no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential’: and that there’s been “no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” All the evidence points to CBD being safe to take and very likely to bring numerous health benefits.
So, with the majority of the world in lockdown and under all kinds of different stresses and strains, we’ve checked out some of the very best CBD products on the market to bring a bit of much needed relief and to help protect your mental and physical wellbeing.
