Here at The MALESTROM, we had the pleasure of chatting to Joe Romeiro earlier this year as he readied himself for the forthcoming and incredibly popular Shark Week on Discovery. Through his award-winning cinematography Romeiro, who was born in Portugal and moved to the US as a child, has produced and directed some incredible films that shine a light on this most incredible species.
His work is aimed at changing perceptions both of the ocean we neglect and those magnificent creatures that inhabit it. Romeiro’s love of sharks was born like many a young man from watching endless hours of natural history documentaries and of course the iconic movie that changed the world, Jaws.
In this short film, he reflects on the impact we as a species are having on shark populations, which are disappearing at a rate of 3 a second. That equates to over 75 million a year. A sobering thought.
