Today is the 20th of February. It marks what would have been the late great Kurt Cobain’s 50th birthday. The rock god died in 1994 at the age of 27, a short existence, but one packed with groundbreaking creative output, and one that would allow him to transcend into an icon.
He was the poster boy for the Seattle grunge scene he helped create, yet the fame and accolades he received never sat comfortably with him. Kurt was a different type of rock star, and his uniqueness aside from his music is another reason he is remembered.
The songs he created with Nirvana have resonated throughout countless lives and continue to do so to this today. Here’s Kurt pretty much defining a generation with Smells Like Teen Spirit from the bands seminal 1991 album Nevermind.
Any fans out there wanting to own a serious piece of history currently have the chance to buy Kurt’s very own axe, if they have some serious dollars to dish out that is.
The Nirvana frontman’s guitar, a Hagstrom Blue Sparkle Deluxe, is currently available to buy on eBay, with some of the proceeds going to a charity helping the homeless get a home. Given his other guitars have gone for upwards of $100,000 it’s not going to go cheap. The auction ends on February 26th.
Kurt’s legacy lives on through the music he left to inspire countless beings. His influence is still felt strongly 23 years after his death and also the lingering feeling of a life lost too soon. He remains missed, a thought Kurt’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain echoed when she shared a heartbreaking handwritten message on Instagram as a tribute to her father.
“Today would’ve been your 50th birthday,” she writes. “You are loved and you are missed. Thank you for giving me the GIFT of life. Forever your daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.”
