National Geographic Traveller UK have announced the winners of their prestigious 2019 Photography Competition, and as ever there are some fantastic images on view.
After selecting from thousands of entrants from all across the UK, the grand prize went to Daniel Burton, whose striking close up image of a mountain gorilla in the Congo earns him a wildlife photography adventure in the Tatra Mountains of Slovakia along with major kudos among the photographic community.
Chris Hudson, art director at National Geographic Traveller (UK), said of the grand prize winner’s photograph: “His shot with eye contact immediately captivates the viewer, and the way in which he’s filled the frame with the subject makes it an intense and imposing photograph. Overall, it offers a real sense of an intimate and personal experience, which is ultimately what we’re looking for.”
National Geographic Traveller (UK) launched its first annual Photography Competition in August 2011. This year, photographers were invited to submit their entries in five categories: Cities; Nature; People; Food; and Portfolio.
The judging panel consisted of landscape and wildlife photographer Emer O’Shea; travel photographer Nori Jemil; nature and adventure photographer Craig Parry; Time Out picture editor Ben Rowe; Amateur Photographer feature editor Amy Davies; and National Geographic Traveller art director Chris Hudson.

People: Justin Cliffe, dyeing wool in a Marrakech souk, Morocco
Food: Pablo Borrego, Kandy Central Market, Sri Lanka
Cities: Annapurna Mellor, taxi driver in Kolkata, India
Portfolio: Simon Urwin, Pengzhen, Chengdu, China
Nature & Overall Winner: Daniel Burton, mountain gorilla in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo
