Ted Talks, Lavender Walks & A Massive Zipline – The Weekly EDIT

The Royal Academy Summer Show

With summer so far feeling like a bit of a washout in many parts, we’ve kept a firm eye on events that can be enjoyed within four walls, as well as a scattering of those in the great outdoors. There’s the Royal Academy’s always interesting Summer Exhibition, a celebration of John William’s cinematic scores and much, much more. Here’s the Weekly EDIT.

Zip Now London (Archbishop Park, 12th till September 15th)

Zip Now London Archbishop Park

Head on over to Archbishop Park in Lambeth and try out the daunting 225-metre zip line that’s running until September. Get a perfect view of the Capital’s skyline as you ride at up to 50 mph side by side with up to three friends or be a hero and go solo. It’s £30 per thrill ride, but be sure to book ahead, there will be queues around the block with adrenaline junkies for this one.

Following on from last years 250th summer exhibition at the Royal Academy, acclaimed British painter Jock McFadyen takes over the reins from Grayson Perry to administer affairs this time around. With over 1,500 works of art on display, from completely unheard of artists to pieces by Tracy Emin and Banksy there really is something for everyone at the show.

And even if you don’t fancy paying the entry price you can wander around the Royal Academy’s courtyard and check out Thomas Houseago’s rather freaky human-like sculptures.

The Music of John Williams for Spielberg (Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, 14th/15th)

E.T.

The man responsible for some of the most celebrated film scores in recent memory, John Williams, who created the soundtrack to our lives with his work on E.T., Jaws, Indiana Jones and many more will be celebrated with two special performances in Liverpool.

Vasily Petrenko will conduct the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for this live concert with cinematic visuals and spectacular, specially-devised lighting and digital effects. It promises to be a magical cinematic event not to be missed.

The Colour Palace (Dulwich, 12th till September 22nd)

The Colour Palace

If you happen to live in South London it’s well worth a trip to the rather vibrant structure that’s been built outside the Dulwich Picture Gallery. The rainbow-like Colour Place, a geometrically patterned 10-metre high cube, standing on four huge red cylinders, has been created by Pricegore architects and designer Yinka Ilori.

A fusion of West African and European influences, inspired by the buzz of fabric markets in Lagos, Nigeria, the space will host a full line up of events. But you might just want to stand and gawp at it for a while.

Lavender Farm Mayfield (Surrey, Now)

Mayfield Lavender Farm

Depending on the weather this 25-acre patch of land could well be awash with glorious sight and smell of lavender. Mayfield Farm, just a stone’s throw from the Capital in Banstead, Surrey, has become something of an iconic attraction for fans of photography and nature lovers alike, thanks to the stunning lavender filled field this time of the year.

Two varieties of English lavender are grown on the organic chalky soil, with flowers harvested to produce lavender oil. Visitors can wander the field, get a guaranteed Instagram hit before taking a trip to the nearby alfresco teashop.

TedxGlasgow (SEC Armadillo, 14th)

Ted x Glasgow

New Podcast

Digging Deep: The Robert Plant Podcast (Sticher, Out Now)

Digging Deep the Robert Plant podcast

Former Led Zeppelin frontman and old school dude Robert Plant fronts this new podcast that sees 6 Music’s Matt Everitt help the musician recall some of his most memorable collaborations.

Known for forays into countless different genres, Plant lifts the lid on his work with the likes of Nigel Kennedy and Alison Krauss. There are seven in total, dropping fortnightly. Well worth giving a whole lotta love.

New Music

Bill Callahan – Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest (Drag City, 14th)

Bill Callahan Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest Album Cover

American singer-songwriter Bill Callahan’s first album since 2013 sees his poetic, folky, effortless charms make a welcome return with a huge 20 song body of work. The little tease has been delivering this album in batches, this being the third of four.

If you haven’t come across Callahan’s music it’s like going on a melodic journey created with his unique brand of instrumentation and almost spoken word troubadour spirit. Well worth the trip.

Bob Marley and The Wailers Legend 35th Vinyl Anniversary (UMC – Uni/Island, 14th)

Bob Marley legend album cover

The best selling reggae album of all time (28 million copies) will be celebrated on the June 14th, 35 years after its original release in 1984. And unsurprisingly it sounds just as current as it ever did.

This double vinyl of Legend features 16-tracks, including the two original U.K. cassette bonus tracks, ‘Easy Skanking’ and ‘Punky Reggae Party.’ A must have for any vinyl collection.

New TV

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese (Netflix, 12th)

The Rolling Thunder Revue was an almost mythical multi-artist show that folk legend Bob Dylan toured around the East Coast and Canada in late 1975 before taking it all over America in early 1976.

Martin Scorsese’s Netflix documentary uses the footage shot from the tour by cinematographers David Myers and Howard Alk, along with interviews with show members such as Joan Baez and  Dylan himself in his first on-camera interview in a decade.

Highlights include the Mr Tambourine Man singer driving around a Winnebago and the moment the band dropped in on Gordon Lightfoot’s house in Canada.

Awake: The Million Dollar Game (Netflix, 14th)

Sleep deprivation, while it feels horrible for those suffering, it seems cam provide some consistent laughs for onlookers. Hence the creation of this slightly cruel game new gameshow from Netflix. Sleepless for 24 hours, contestants in the show stumble through challenges both eccentric and mundane for a chance at a $1 million prize. Worth staying up for.

New Movies

The Hummingbird Project (Cinemas, 14th)

This eccentric thriller sees Jesse Eisenberg and Alexander Skarsgård play cousins determined on getting rich in the stock market, by the plan of building a super-fast cross-country fibre-optic cable between Kansas & New Jersey to help them get the advantage over others, a task which proves extremely challenging for the pair.

They’re then faced with the added challenge of their old boss (Salma Hayek), a manipulative trader who will stop at nothing to come between them and beat them at their own game.

Diego Maradona (Cinemas, 14th)

With access to over 500 hours of never before seen footage, this documentary hones in on one of the most controversial, talented and recognisable sporting figures of all time Diego Maradona.

It follows the man infamously responsible for the ‘hand of God’ from his humble roots to international superstardom. A polarising figure certainly, but has there ever been a more majestic player to grace the hallowed turf?
