The Innocent Man on Netflix

Netflix are no strangers to the true crime genre with huge hits like Making a Murderer and The Staircase drawing in viewers in their droves.

The popular streaming service has just released the trailer for their new true crime docuseries The Innocent Man and from the first watch of the trailer it looks like we’re going to be hooked on this one.

Based on John Grisham’s 2006 best-selling non-fiction book The Innocent Man: Murder And Injustice In A Small Town, the six-part documentary looks at two murders in the town of Ada, Oklahoma in the 1980s.

It all centres around Ronald Williamson, who was convicted of the horrific murder and rape of cocktail waitress Debbie Carter, 21. Williamson was placed on death row for 11 years before finally being released due to new DNA evidence and materials brought to the case by a US non-profit legal organisation called The Innocence Project.

The project’s mission for 25 years has been to exonerate wrongly convicted people and to reform the criminal justice system. At one stage Ronald Williamson was just five days away from being executed.

Ronnie’s conviction came after he was being questioned by police and told them about a dream he had had where he stabbed Debbie Carter. Using this part of the testimony the police purportedly goaded Williamson into making a confession.

The show pieces together interviews with victims’ friends and families, as well as residents of the town, attorneys, journalists, and others who were all involved in the cases here.

In Executive Producer John Grisham’s own words,

“The documentary series of The Innocent Man is gripping, compelling and ultimately just as heartbreaking as the book. Though I know the story well, I can’t wait to watch it again.”

The Innocent Man drops on Netflix on December 14th. Check out the gripping trailer below.
