House of Gucci (15)
You don’t have to be a fashionista to enjoy this crime drama helmed by Ridley Scott. In fact this fascinating telling of the shocking tale behind the Gucci family dynasty is more akin to Goodfellas than The Devil Wears Prada.
Lady Gaga steals the show playing Patrizia Reggiani, an outsider from humble beginnings, who marries into the powerful Gucci family. It doesn’t take long for her unbridled ambition to begin unravelling the family legacy, triggering a spiral of betrayal, decadence, revenge, and murder. With an all-star including Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons as the Gucci elder statesmen, this one is chic and unique. Who’d have thought that Italian fashion empires could be so cutthroat!

Dig Deeper: The Disappearance of Birgit Meier (Netflix)
If you’re a massive true crime fans like us, then you’ll want to take a look at this new Netflix documentary that puts the spotlight on the disappearance of a young German girl in 1989. Police missteps plagued this particular case for years, but Birgit’s brother has never wavered in his ongoing quest to find out what really happened to her. Watch the trailer on Netflix.

Stephen King is the living author with the most film adaptations. Thirty six of the author’s books have been turned into 60 movies (so far). The very first was the 1976 horror classic Carrie, with the most recent to be released based on Dr Sleep, his sequel to The Shining. In an interview with Rolling Stone, King made it known that his favourite movie adaptation was Stand By Me. He said it was true to the book by “maintaining its emotional crux”.
Hidden Gem
The Innkeepers (Amazon Prime)
If your idea of a good horror film is a blood soaked kill fest then this slow burning indie flick, probably isn’t for you. But those willing to invest in this little gem of a ghost story from director Ti West will be rewarded. It sees Claire (Sara Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy) as a couple of 20-something losers working the late shift at a supposedly haunted hotel that’s soon set to close its doors for good. Luke knows about the hotels past and the duo set about getting evidence on tape before the place is boarded up.
The film isn’t filled with the usual raft of jump scares we’re used to these days, but is filled with a creeping sense of dread that maximises the chill factor. Stream it for free on Amazon Prime.

Don’t Look Up
Films where there’s a global threat to the Earth tend to be a bit of light relief in the scheme of current world events. Which brings us to this sci-fi dark comedy. It stars A-listers Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as two relatively unknown astronomers who are tracking a huge comet that could spell planetary destruction if it maintains its collision course with our globe.
But their warnings to the president (Meryl Streep) and her adviser (Jonah Hill) fall on deaf ears. In fact it seems the whole world just doesn’t want to know about the potential implosion of all life as we know it. Don’t Look Up arrives on Netflix December 24th.
